Spy Camp is off to a terrific start! This week we have Samantha Rowley, Avery Barnes, and Samantha Ozeas working as our counselors, and we couldn't be happier! Today we had Lasers, T-Shirts, Cover Stories, Codes, and as always, a super-fun CFE (Competition For Enjoyment).
Lasers: Each of our spies was given a crash-course in laser navigation today (luckily only with string, or we might have lost a few appendages!). Our counselors strung red string across a room, and were asked to go through the room as quickly as they could, without touching any of the "laser beams". This activity has always has been a success, and it didn't fail us today! :)
T-Shirts: One of the very fun parts of Spy Camp is that each child gets to design their own Spy Camp t-shirt. Most choose to put their agent names, and a few symbols representing spying or their agent name. The kids use fabric markers, so the t-shirts can be washed an dried like a normal t-shirt. :)
Cover Stories: A cover story, or legend, is a spy's excuse for being where they are when out on secret missions. Here, the kids made up names, appearances, and wrote interesting facts about themselves. One of our agents was 38 years old! :) Another had green hair, and a third was 5'8". Needless to say, our Spy Camp kids are certainly creative! :)
Codes: Today, our agents learned three new codes.
Number for a letter substitution: Each letter of the alphabet, starting with "A" is assigned a number form 1-26 (so A=01, B=02, C=03, and so on until Z=26).
Pig Pen: Click here to learn more about the Pig Pen Cipher and do fun activities: http://crypto.interactive-maths.com/pigpen-cipher.html
Pig Latin: Pig Latin a=is a classic, as well as easy to learn and use. You simply take the first letter of the word, and move it to the end of the word, and then add "-ay" to the end. So "camp" becomes "ampcay". With words that begin with two consonants, you take both to the end of the word and add "-ay", so "spy" becomes "yspay". For words that begin with vowels, all you have to do is add "-yay" to end of the word! So "apple" becomes "appleyay". :) Can you decode this message? Yspay ampcay isyay awesomeyay! :)
Today's CFE: Today in our CFE, each camper was given a plate covered in frosting. The kids had to lick the frosting off to reveal a secret code underneath. Then, with the help of their teammates, the campers found each clue and reported to their counselor! Today's CFE total is:
3)Stary-Eyed Wolves: 5 pts
2) Gryffindor Kitties: 6 pts
1) Secret Spies: 7 pts
Thank you all for coming to Spy Camp, we can't wait for tomorrow!
Love,
Samantha Rowley, Avery Barnes, and Samantha Ozeas :)
